Three Filipino Artists: Francesca Enriquez, Waling Waling Gorospe and Elaine Navas. Osage Gallery City is proud to present new work by three exciting young Filipino artists - Francesca Enriquez, Waling Waling Gorospe and Elaine Navas The Philippines are tremendously rich when it comes to art and contemporary Filipino art is marked by great creative diversity. In part, this may be attributable to the many different schools and their many different influences, interests and practices. As women, gender issues are central to all three of these artists¡¦ work and they have a shared ethos, but each are stylistically very different. Francesca Enriquez paints things from daily life and imbues them with an expressive symbolist quality. For symbolist artists, that which is seen cannot adequately reflect reality; the artist must recreate reality through symbols to better express what is seen or felt. In her current series, Enriquez¡¦s genteel domestic interiors suggest a full rich life, somewhat materialistic and with an appreciation for the finer things in life, but with something missing. Her paintings of interiors give form to the mood or spirit embodied in the work. Waling Waling Gorospe picks and chooses and groups with aesthetic sensibility elements from daily life in order to find harmony. She is also concerned with the expressive power of art. Best known for her meticulous paintings of aged and worn faces, she now brings that same attention to detail to her observations of the accoutrements of daily life Elaine Navas paintings of gates or doors are loosely painted, richly textured fields of colour that are often completely abstracted other than for small items of hardware. The paintings only read as gates or doors because of the addition of padlocks, latches, keyholes or handles. The isolation of these objects from their normal day to day contexts forces our attention onto their metaphoric qualities. The exhibition opens on 24 August 2006 and continues until 10 October 2006.
